An increasing number of American children grow up in “complex families” –- families in which adults other than or in addition to the child’s biological parents are strongly involved in the child’s life. This is becoming more and more frequent in adoption, as evidenced in the rise in open adoptions, kinship adoptions, adoptions by same-sex couples, and so on.

In order to explore these issues, the University of Massachusetts Amherst’s Rudd Adoption Research Program will host this one-day conference on “New Worlds of Adoption: Growing Up in Complex Families” .   The focus will be on new perspectives on adoption and will be valuable for professionals and students in the human services fields, social science researchers, and community members.

Our 2010 annual conference will offer the most current research and practice information for parents and professionals via dynamic, nationally-known keynote speakers and experts in child welfare and related fields in 30 different workshop presentations.  Child welfare is a challenging field but one where the possibility of progress inspires us all – whether on the implementation of statewide policy to improve families’ lives or on the individual level where a child getting herself independently dressed for school can fill a parent with joy.

This conference will give you an opportunity to ensure you are current on law and policy as well as learn new skills and strategies to work with families and children. It is also an opportunity to gain perspective, network with other parents and professionals and have some fun.  As noted by one of last year’s participants, “I will go back to parent my difficult children where they are, not where it is expected for them to be. I always leave feeling recharged with renewed purpose.”

Location Farleigh Dickinson University, Metropolitan Campus

Hyperlink http://june42010culturalnarrativesoftrauma.eventbrite.com/
Notes Across continents and cultures, traumatic events leave their mark on individuals, families and communities, whether through natural disasters, interpersonal violence or large scale events of man-made intention.  The past decade has witnessed a burgeoning professional literature on the impact of trauma, resulting in significant advances in trauma-based interventions.  This conference will examine the philosophy and practices behind the concept of trauma-informed systems of care, emphasizing cultural competence as a foundation for such care. Trauma-informed care presents a fundamental "paradigm shift" in how we approach assessment and intervention across services, populations and settings.  Set within the context of cultural competence, such systems of care demonstrate real potential for moving beyond treatment to foster healing and transformation. This conference will offer participants an array of learning experiences that present various aspects of culturally competent, trauma-informed systems of care, from the perspectives of professionals in the field, consumers and advocates.

Notes All children need to grow up in families.  Join us at our conference this year as we celebrate those parenting or working with children in foster care or who have been adopted.  At this year’s conference: Family!, you will learn new strategies to help children develop to their potential and as well as hear what is new in law, policy, practice and research.
