Notes: Anxiety disorders are one of the most common concerns that present in the childhood years with approximately 12% of children experiencing clinical levels of anxiety. Often the anxiety symptoms interfere in the child’s life and with family functioning, and this interference has been shown to continue into adulthood.  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is highly effective for reducing the symptoms and interference for both children and adults with anxiety disorders. Learning the basic principles of treatment and the main components of CBT for anxiety disorders may help parents, teachers and mental health professionals understand the therapy process and further ensure that the children obtain the type of therapy that has been shown to be most beneficial in treating anxiety disorders.
Professional Development credits will be offered upon verifying attendance of the webinar and completion of the exit survey. We will mail them to you the week after the webinar.

Notes:

When Americans contemplate the impending debate over education reform, the majority is not likely to consider the lessons to be learned from foster care.  Research consistently suggests that childhood trauma, placement instability and myriad other factors leave many students in foster care far behind their peers in almost all academic measures. Despite this reality, stakeholders from both child welfare and education across the country are proving that tight collaboration can yield dramatic results for students in foster care. This signals an opportunity to apply these lessons to wider populations of vulnerable students struggling through similar educational impediments.

Different strategies designed for use with children at various cognitive and developmental levels will be described.

When your child exhibits challenging or frustrating behaviors, do you:  (a) Immediately assume it's related to his adoption history? (b) Not even consider adoption? (c) Struggle to determine when to point to adoption and when to assume it's just kid's stuff?
Because many families struggle with the difficult task of sorting out if behaviors and challenges are adoption related or not, we've asked an expert to help us:
Discuss common challenging behaviors adopted children may exhibit at each developmental stage
Offer real life examples and suggestions for handling these behaviors
Examine effective and ineffective parenting tools
