But they may not have the time or counseling experience to focus on training you to really connect with birthparents. This workshop will teach you to feel more confident and to gain the skills necessary for making an adoption situation work not just for now, but for the long term.

Notes: See former friends and make new friends at our Cheesequake State Park event on July 26th.  We will be meeting at the Hooks Lake area of the park (please follow signs in the park to the Hooks Lake area). This area has a swimming lake with a lifeguard stand so bring your bathing suits. There are picnic tables in the area, as well as a basketball court, a children's' playground, a snack bar, and restroom facilities. Unfortunately the area didn't look shady so bring good sun block! Feel free to bring your own lunch or to buy something at the snack bar. There are picnic tables in the area, but it's a good idea to bring blankets to eat on because we don't have the right as a group to reserve all of the lunch tables and keep the general public out of this area.
On weekends, the park charges people $10/car to enter the park so bring your friends and/or family (just let us know the headcount)!

Notes: SFOE is a 14 week skills based program for families that have at least one child between the ages of 6-11 (5 and 12 Ok too). We usually meet from 530-800 one night a week. For the first 45 minutes to an hour we have dinner together. The parents and children then break up into their respective groups for an hour. Some topics that we cover in group include social skills, communication skills, managing stress, solving behavior problems, and building stronger relationships. After the groups, the families come back together for a family activity. This is usually something fun for the family to do together. This is also a good time for the family to practice something they learned in group. Families receive a $10 gift card for each session they attend as well as a tray of food to take home after session. We hold a graduation ceremony at the end of the cycle.

Families that graduate receive certificates of completion and a nice family gift. We don't tell the families what the gift is, but in the past, we have sent families to the circus, Newark Baseball (with BBQ package) and to the movies. We have 2 group co-facilitators for each group as well as a babysitter for children 4 and under.

New Jersey adults, who were adopted as children, are barred from access to their birth records. A bill to change that recently passed committee with a unanimous decision, but there is staunch opposition to the proposed legislation from an unlikely coalition of opponents: the A.C.L.U., the NJ State Bar Association, and Right to Life. History is in their favor as the bill has been voted down repeatedly since it was first introduced in 1980. Sandy King’s field piece profiles two adoptees who have been lobbying ever since. But we also hear from the director of NJ Right to Life who fears a rise in abortion rates if adoption files were opened. In the studio, Raymond Brown talks to if State Sen. Loretta Weinberg, Bar Association Representative Thomas Snyder, and Attorney Barry Evenchick.
